Albert Styron's Store  (since 1920)

Info:  Lighthouse Gifts, Wines, Accessories, Gourmet Items, Coffees, Teas, Ice Cream.  Styron's Store is on the National Register of Historic Places.  The Store opened in its present location in 1920, making it one of the oldest establishments on Ocracoke Island.  Owner Albert Styron tore down family's store on Hog Island, near Cedar Island, and loaded the cypress wall into his boat.  He carted Styron's Store to Ocracoke Island and rebuilt the business their.   Burgundy leather-bound ledgers contain records of transactions made in the store since1925 are displayed as they been for over a half-century along with the original cash register, safe, roll-top desk, adding machine and feed scales (which now holds storeroom keys).  Today, great granddaughter, Candy, runs the family business.  The store opens in mid-March and closes the first week in January.  Both local residents and summer visitors enjoy stopping by to shop and say hello.
